Ticket-holding obligation on long-distance services.

In mid-June, the public transport industry decided to extend the obligation to be in possession of a valid ticket to long-distance services as of 11 December 2011. As is already the case for regional and urban public transport services, customers on long-distance services will also have to purchase their tickets prior to departure. Anyone travelling without a ticket will have to pay a surcharge of at least 90 Swiss francs in addition to the price of the ticket.

The Swiss Public Transport Association (VöV), staff and customer representatives and SBB have defined customer-friendly ways of implementing the new requirement to hold a valid ticket before boarding long-distance services. For example, class and route upgrades may still be purchased on board the train without a supplement.

The details of the ticket-holding obligation are as follows:

  • Customers may continue to purchase class upgrades on board the train without incurring a surcharge. However, the minimum price on long-distance services will rise from  5 to 10 francs.
  • Customers may continue to purchase route upgrades on board the train without incurring a service surcharge.
  • If a passenger forgets his/her personal travelcard, he/she will still only have to pay 5 francs.
