The daily power temperature curve.

  • SBB: Energy demand changes every minute, peaking during the rush hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The daily cycle mirrors the timetable.
  • Zurich: In the “standard” grid, the peaks are much lower. The little jumps at around 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. are due to boilers starting to heat up.

Power consumption at SBB.

In 2009, SBB produced and obtained 3,150 gigawatt-hours of electricity, of which 2,391 were used for railway operations by SBB and other rail infrastructure. (Source: SBB, Zahlen und Fakten 2010).

The need for energy and for greater levels of performance will rise in future. Above all, energy needs will increase as service provision rises, while performance levels must grow to supply more powerful engines. SBB-owned production facilities will play a critical role in meeting this demand. In addition, SBB will ensure adequate supplies by contracting for external resources and by holding shares in partner power plants.
