The SBB power network consists of six SBB-owned hydroelectric plants, six transformer stations and shared power plants, as well as 1,900 kilometres of power transmission lines and 60 substations.

This ensures that even at peak consumption periods there is sufficient power available at a frequency of 16.7 hertz. In addition, SBB operates a number of medium- and low-voltage 50-hertz plants to power its technical installations and buildings.
