The SBB mobile telecommunications network.
The GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railways) digital communications platform is a cornerstone of SBB’s innovation strategy. In future the new technology will cover all the mobile voice and data services for SBB’s train radio system, thus meeting a key precondition for transferring more traffic from road to rail, further expanding public transport and simplifying cross-border services.
GSM-R is a digital radio system that has been specially developed for railways. Based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology widely used in mobile telecommunications, GSM-R expands on GSM, adding features specifically designed for trains. GSM-R frequencies have been standardised internationally and are exclusively reserved for use by railways. To that end, it represents an important step forward for railway operations in Switzerland and throughout Europe. The GSM-R network is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2015.
