You can now test a variety of modes of transport and drive systems for their impact on the environment. An environmental balance sheet gives you a transparent comparison of them all.

In the SBB EcoCalculator you can automatically produce an environmental balance sheet for any selected journey by car or rail. But how does rail travel compare to air travel, for example? The timetable also lets you compare other modes of transport, such as planes, coaches and motorbikes. The values for each are based on figures for journeys of 100 kilometres. You can also compare alternative energy sources such as biogas and electricity.

The comparisons are made using the environmental audit database ecoinvent, which takes into account the vehicles, streets and tracks as infrastructure, as well as energy used directly for vehicle power. Everything from the production to operation and disposal of the necessary infrastructure and materials flows into the environmental balance sheet: the whole chain of environmental impact – from beginning to end of the life cycle – is thus taken into account.
