Rail has the edge.
900,000 customers are on the move in an environmentally friendly and climate-compatible way with SBB every day.
On average, a trip by rail uses four times less energy and generates 20 times less CO2 than a comparable journey by road or air. SBB is able to achieve this good result to a large extent thanks to its climate-friendly electric motive power.
One person's average journey by train in Switzerland uses the equivalent of one litre of fuel per hundred kilometres. The "one-litre-per-100 kilometres" vehicle thus already exists – it's an electric train. The score for freight traffic is also good: SBB freight trains are responsible for releasing 14 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere per tonne of freight and kilometre – whereas transportation in an average Swiss truck generates an average of 281 grams.
SBB also promotes combined mobility as a means of ensuring a continuous transport chain: together with other mobility providers, the company ensures the best possible connections from trains to buses and trams, offers Park & Ride, bicycle parks and CarSharing, and is noted by its customers for its innovative railfreight solutions.
Rail is ahead in environmental comparisons with other modes of transport: as well as an energy-efficient power source it scores most points through climate-friendly electricity production and its intensively used transport infrastructure. The high density of services and the average of around 200 people per train reduce considerably the impact that each passenger has on the infrastructure. For the equivalent of each passenger-kilometre, the manufacture and disposal of trains and tracks amounts to around 6 g of CO2 emissions, whereas the production and disposal of cars and roads amounts to around 32 g of CO2 per passenger-kilometre.
