Lucerne Festival at Easter.

Lucerne Festival zu Ostern.

From 24 March to 1 April 2012, the Lucerne Festival at Easter will take place at the Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne (KKL).

It’s hard to imagine a brighter flourish to start off the new festival year: the radiant C major of Mozart‘s "Linz" Symphony and Schumann’s Second – and Claudio Abbado, who brings his Orchestra Mozart to Lucerne for the first time. Mozart will also be heard when the King’s Consort take on the Requiem and Maria João Pires performs the stirring D minor Piano Concerto. Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus Wien will continue with their thrilling Handel performances, András Schiff conducts Bach’s B minor Mass, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony and Chorus will be led by Mariss Jansons and Bernard Haitink in symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms, and Bruckner as well as Janáček’s "Glagolitic Mass." What lovelier place is there to set the mood for Easter than Lucerne?

Lucerne Festival in Summer.

From 8 August to 15 September 2012 at the Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne (KKL).

The theme for Lucerne Festival in Summer 2012 is "Faith." The program ranges widely across music history and religions, from pinnacles of Western church music to Tibetan chant, from Mendelssohn’s "Reformation" Symphony and Verdi’s theatrical Requiem to Schoenberg’s opera "Moses und Aron." As composers-in-residence we will host Philippe Manoury and Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the most significant composers of our time, whose music makes questions of faith and meaning ever-present. Our "artiste étoile" is the young Latvian podium conductor Andris Nelsons, who will conduct symphonic works by Beethoven, Mahler, and Shostakovich that profess a creed of their own.
Over five and a half weeks, world-famous orchestras, conductors, and soloists will gather in Lucerne: from Cecilia Bartoli to Lang Lang, from Daniel Barenboim to Simon Rattle, and from the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Claudio Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra close out their great Mahler cycle with the Eighth Symphony. And the Lucerne Festival Academy will explore works from Schoenberg and Ives right up to the present.

Lucerne Festival at the Piano.

From 19 to 25 November 2012 at the Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne (KKL).

November belongs to wizards of the keyboard as leading international pianists gather for seven days in Lucerne and transform the city into a Mecca for the art of the piano. András Schiff and the legendary American pianist Leon Fleisher appear as guest artists in 2012, along with the lively sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque, one of the finest piano duos in the world. Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Bernard Haitink, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe perform Maurice Ravel’s two piano concertos, while the Debut series introduces the stars of tomorrow. And Piano Off-Stage, the festival within the festival, promises the finest piano jazz long into the night.
