Annual Report 2011.

Each day in 2011, SBB took 977,000 passengers to their destinations – getting them there on time, safely and reliably. This was 2.7 percent more than in 2010. SBB has posted excellent figures for punctuality and safety, and its customers have also given it a good rating. Despite a marked decline in net income from passenger services and dwindling demand for domestic freight, consolidated net income amounts to a gratifying CHF 338.7 million. SBB was able to finance its commercial investments mainly from its own resources. The Group posted nega-tive free cash flow of CHF 5.2 million. At just under CHF 8 billion, however, interest-bearing debt remains high. Moreover, SBB will enhance its product offering and services, and gear them even more closely to customers’ needs. At the same time, SBB will further improve its efficiency in the years to come.

Even more passengers and an encouraging net profit – but rising debt.

SBB fared well in 2010, moving 951,000 people a day – more than ever before. Passenger numbers were six percent higher than in 2009. SBB Cargo also increased its output in a difficult environment, carrying 200,000 tonnes of freight a day. Rail passengers' satisfaction with safety and punctuality increased further. Consolidated profits totalled an encouraging CHF 298.3 million, but heavy capital expenditures and a contribution of CHF 938 million to the restructuring of the SBB pension fund led to negative free cash flow of CHF 1,371 million. This had the effect of raising SBB's total interest-bearing debt by CHF 763 million to CHF 8.068 billion.

SBB Cargo and the intermodal operator Hupac are jointly founding an independent, neutral company to handle transalpine transit freight between Germany and Italy.
SBB awards Bombardier the contract to build 59 double-deck trains for long-distance services.

SBB has placed the largest rolling stock order in its history, with the goal of improving its rail offering for its customers. The Swiss rail provider has commissioned Bombardier Transportation Switzerland AG to build 59 new double-deck trains for its long-distance services, a total order volume of approximately CHF 1.9 billion. The decision was taken following an extensive tender procedure governed by international agreements and Swiss legislation. But in the end, it was clear: Bombardier could provide the best product both in terms of passenger comfort and overall cost-effectiveness. The new trains are due to be rolled out in phases from December 2013, first on InterCity services on the St. Gallen–Zurich–Berne–Geneva and Romanshorn–Zurich–Berne–Brig routes, and on InterRegio services between Zurich and Lucerne, followed by other routes throughout Switzerland. SBB is ordering a total of 436 fully air-conditioned coaches with over 36,000 seats to enhance service quality for all its customers.
