BikeParking at the station.

  • Switzerland’s stations have around 82,000 free spaces for bikes and motorbikes.
  • For a fee, you can also park your bike up safely for days at a time in one of the bike parks with security surveillance at stations in 23 towns and cities. Monthly and annual tickets are available for regular users.

Further details can be found at www.velostation.ch (website available in French and German only).

Send your bike on a journey.

Unaccompanied carriage.

As long as you have a valid ticket, you can hand your bike in at any Swiss station with a luggage counter and pick it up at the other end.

  • If you drop it off by 19:00, your bike will be available to pick up from 09:00 on the next day but one. Please note that luggage counters’ opening times vary.
  • If you are travelling alone or with your family, you do not need to book in advance to have bikes sent as luggage. Groups of ten or more must book the service at least 48 hours before departure by calling Rail Service on 0900 300 300 (CHF 1.19/ min from the Swiss fixed-line network).

Travelling with your own bike.

Perfect journey planning.

The map shows all the rail, bus and boat routes that allow you to take your bike with you as long as you have a valid bike ticket. If your bike can be folded away into a carry case, you can even take it as hand luggage on some services.

On traditional family days out with good weather prospects, increased passenger volumes can be expected between 07:00 and 09:00 on trains to Ticino, Valais, the Bernese Oberland, Seeland, Jura, Graubünden and Lake Constance. At such times the trains will be carrying more bikes, prams, luggage and leisure equipment and space may be limited.

Self-service loading of bicycles – the important points.

  • When using the online timetable, select «Advanced search» and then «Carriage of bicycles required (Switzerland only)» so that you are only shown services on which bikes are permitted.
  • Trains that do not have space for bicycles and on which you are not allowed to take your bike are marked on the timetable and departure boards by the symbol.
  • The expected occupancy provided in the online timetable is a useful indicator of how full trains are likely to be and whether another train (e.g. an additional service) or a different route might be less busy and thus better suited for taking your bike along.
  • A bicycle reservation symbol or reference number on the timetable indicates a train or postbus for which reservation is required.
  • Due to weight restrictions, the carriage of e-bikes by Swiss PostBus is possible only to a very limited degree. E-bikes with a yellow registration plate are regarded as mopeds and cannott be carried by Swiss PostBus.

Tip: Check the SBB timetable’s occupancy level indicator on the online or mobile timetable to select your ideal connection. That way you can use less busy trains (e.g. additional services) for your journey with your bike.

Taking your own bike with you on the train.

Self-service loading of bicycles. Making sure your bike has room.

  • A reservation is mandatory for self-service loading of bicycles on any InterCity tilting train (ICN) between 21 March and 31 October (reservation charge: CHF 5.00).
  • At the weekend, self-service loading of bicycles is unrestricted on S-Bahn trains in Zurich. From Monday to Friday, however, bikes are permitted only from 08:00 to 16:00 and 19:00 to 06:00.
  • Trains that do not take bikes are marked on the timetable and departure boards by the symbol.
  • Groups of ten or more are not permitted to carry bikes with them on trains. We recommend bike rental or unaccompanied carriage for such groups.

Ensuring you wait at the right spot on the platform.

  • The blue train information poster on the platform shows you where the carriage in which bikes are allowed will stop.
  • The bike symbols on the doors also guide you to the bike storage area.
