Central to the exhibition is the artistic method used by Matisse to metamorphose the natural form into a stylisation.

Starting from a naturalistic approach, Matisse made his figures increasingly abstract and went as far as radical stylisation. He captured the key “states” as independent sculptures in doing so, and the workings of his creative process unfold before our eyes. This process finds parallels in his painting and drawing work. The exhibition explores the relationship between them for the first time.

His various sources of inspiration – nude photographs, African and ancient models – as well as photographs, showing Matisse as a sculptor, round off the focused display.
