Mummies – Mysteries of time: this special exhibition brings one of the world’s most extensive mummy exhibitions to Basel.
Items left behind from bygone eras allow us to unravel the enigma of our origins. Mummies form part of this heritage – as individual witnesses to our history. A central focus of the mummy exhibition is the question of why dead bodies remain preserved. What processes allow a corpse to withstand the ravages of time? What conditions are necessary for skin or other soft tissue to remain intact after death? The exhibition impressively illustrates how mummification is not solely a ritual of the Pharaohs: desert sand, ice and dry cellar air also conserve dead bodies. This special exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums of Mannheim (D).
