Kunsthaus Zug presents several thematic focal points, ranging from classical modernism to contemporary art. It also boasts the most important collection of Viennese Modernism outside of Austria.

The special exhibition “Richard Gerstl: Inspiration – Legacy” presents nearly all of his major works from Vienna, New York and Zug and juxtaposes them with more recent positions. For his contemporaries, the painting of Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) was too extreme. Inspired by his unconventional painting style, artists such as Otto Muehl, Georg Baselitz, Günter Brus and Martha Jungwirth have engaged with his oeuvre. Their works show how Gerstl’s legacy continues to have an impact to this day. The exhibition was curated by Matthias Haldemann.

Developed in cooperation with the Leopold Museum in Vienna, the exhibition is accompanied by a jointly published catalogue.
