Kunst Museum Winterthur is showing works by well-connected cosmopolitan painter Carl Spitzweg.

As a reflection of the age and society in which he lived, Spitzweg painted the contradictions of his epoch. He allowed shadows to fall across his idylls whilst simultaneously shedding light on the narrow confines of bourgeois life. His paintings combine home and wanderlust, openness and withdrawal, criticism and contemplation and finally: tradition and modernity.
