Timetable change on 13 December 2015: Numerous changes in Zurich and Western Switzerland, more trains for Eastern Switzerland.

The new timetable will be introduced on 13 December. The most significant changes will affect the Zurich area and Western Switzerland, with passengers set to benefit from additional services thanks to the Zurich cross-city link being opened to long-distance traffic, the beginning of the fourth phase of improvements to the Zurich S-Bahn (stage two) and the start of construction work on "Léman 2030". However, they will have to adapt their routines to some extent.

Those travelling by train on 13 December should take a look at the timetable before setting off: platforms and departure times are changing, particularly in the Zurich area and Western Switzerland. Passengers will be informed about the most significant changes in each region by means of flyers and announcements. Around 350 customer assistants will be on hand at stations throughout Switzerland when the timetable is first introduced and stand campaigns in some locations will provide information in the run-up to the change.

The most significant changes in brief:

German-speaking Switzerland:

  • People travelling between Geneva and St. Gallen will benefit from a new, fast, hourly service from Zurich, which will run on the cross-city line through Zurich and will not stop between Winterthur and St. Gallen (journey time 62 minutes). Gossau, Flawil, Uzwil and Wil will continue to be served twice an hour. In future, the Konstanz–Zurich–Biel/Bienne InterRegio service will terminate at Zurich main station.
  • The "Flugzug" ("plane train") will now travel from Basel SBB to Zurich Airport via Zurich main station, which will create a half-hourly service from the Fricktal region to Zurich main station. Journey times to the airport will increase by up to 11 minutes from each stop.
  • A large number of the Basel–Aarau–Zurich InterRegio trains will now continue on to St. Gallen via Zurich Airport, with stops in Winterthur, Wil in the canton of St. Gallen and Gossau.
  • Trains will now run every half hour between Zofingen and Lenzburg.
  • The current two-hourly services between Basel SBB and Lausanne and Basel SBB and Geneva Airport will now run once an hour between Basel SBB and Biel/Bienne, from where there will be a connecting service to Geneva Airport departing from the same platform. Connections from Basel SBB to Lausanne will be ensured by means of a half-hourly service through Olten (via Bern or Biel/Bienne).
  • A new, attractive commuter IC train will run from Chur to Zurich main station in the mornings from Monday to Friday. An additional RE train will run from Zurich main station to Chur late Friday night/early Saturday morning and late Saturday night/early Sunday morning.
  • A new RegioExpress service will connect the urban agglomerations of Kreuzlingen/Konstanz with St. Gallen and the Fürstenland five times a day, while SBB's Long-Distance Services and Thurbo will provide additional earlymorning and late-night trains between Konstanz and Zurich. Some services will be operated by trains belonging to Long-Distance Services, others by Thurbo (this may even vary from one weekday to the next). Direct services will also run between Weinfelden and Zurich every half hour.
  • Long-distance travel will be improved between Konstanz/Kreuzlingen and Zurich with a new-early morning service and additional late-night trains. This will create a direct, regular half-hourly service between Weinfelden and Zurich.
  • There will also be two new late-night services (Thurbo trains) operating between St. Gallen and Zurich, which will create an integrated, regular timetable: two new late-night services from St. Gallen (departing 22:12) to Zurich and Zurich (departing 23:38) to St. Gallen will fill the last remaining gaps, creating a continuous half-hourly service.

Zurich S-Bahn

  • With regard to regional traffic, SBB and ZVV are introducing services including the S19 between Dietikon and Effretikon and the S21 between Regensdorf and Zurich main station. A number of other lines are to be extended or interlinked. There will also be changes in the journey times of a number of services. These measures aim to significantly improve the reliability and punctuality of the trains, making it easier to keep to the timetables and ensure that connections can be made even during peak hours. This will lead to slightly longer journey times on some routes. ZVV's online timetable will go live from today.

Western Switzerland:

  • The new timetable will bring a large number of changes to Western Switzerland. Between Yverdon-les-Bains and Bienne, ICNs travelling to French- or German-speaking Switzerland currently depart within three minutes of each other. In the 2016 timetable, they will depart at 30-minute intervals.
  • In the canton of Neuchâtel, this is the main innovation for our customers. It means that half-hourly connections to the rest of the country will be possible and that connections with the Neuchâtel Mountains (La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle) and Val-de-Travers will run on the same half-hourly schedule.
  • In the Bernese Jura, all train timetables will also be offset by 30 minutes in comparison with 2015. Additional trains will run between St-Imier and Bienne and between Bienne and La Chaux-de-Fonds during the morning rush hour. An additional train will run Monday to Friday between Moutier (departing at 6:45 a.m.) and Sonceboz-Sombeval.
  • The RER Vaud will be extending its network to Grandson, with half-hourly services, longer platforms and a renovated station. Morges will once again be served by the ICN to and from the Jura Foot. And finally, passengers travelling from Lausanne to St. Gallen will save a whole 18 minutes beyond Zurich.

Alternative solutions.

  • Seven out of the 44 daily InterRegio trains will no longer be stopping in Leuk in order to avoid a timetable conflict with the EuroCity. Affected customers will be able to travel on RegionAlps regional trains. These trains make more stops, increasing the journey time to 9 minutes between Bern and Leuk. Possible scenarios are currently being investigated in order to improve the situation from 2017.
  • In Bex, eight InterRegio trains out of 51 will no longer stop daily due to insufficient time in a very busy timetable. A rail shuttle between Aigle and St Maurice will fill this gap.
  • The ICN that runs around the Jura Foot will no longer be able to stop in Renens in the mornings (6:10 a.m., 7:10 a.m.), but the InterRegio trains on the Simplon line will continue to stop during rush hours.
  • In Nyon, where the network is also saturated, the ICN will only stop in the morning and early evening. Passengers can still travel to German-speaking Switzerland from Morges, where the ICN services will now be stopping again.
  • In Geneva, the RegioExpress Lausanne–Vevey or Lausanne–Romont will be running every half hour on the regional lines La Plaine–Geneva and Lancy-Pont-Rouge–Geneva. There will be a faster national connection during rush hours between Lancy-Pont-Rouge and the Valais InterRegio service.

Simplon car-carrying service

  • The service will once again run every 90 minutes between Brig and Iselle di Trasquera.


  • TILO lines S40 and S50 are to be enhanced, with additional Stabio–Mendrisio services running approximately every 30 minutes throughout the day. There will also be more direct trains on the S50 with the addition of two direct TILO S50 services from Stabio to Lugano/Bellinzona in the mornings and another two direct services covering the return journey in the evenings. The direct S40 to Albate-Camerlata is currently running a limited service due to engineering works between Mendrisio and Chiasso. Passengers needing to travel from Albate-Camerlata/Como to Stabio via Mendrisio will be able to take the S10 to Mendrisio and then the S40/S50 on to Stabio, with the same applying in reverse for passengers travelling in the opposite direction. S10 and RE10 services will be unchanged from 2015 apart from the fact that some S10s will now continue on to Como–Albate Camerlata. Some TILO S10 services will be terminating at and starting from Bellinzona instead of Castione-Arbedo due to engineering works. Passengers travelling to/from Castione-Arbedo will be able to connect easily with the TILO S20 line. The TILO S20 services hauled by Flirt TILOs and DOMINOs will remain as in 2015 with the exception of the last four trains on Sundays. These will only run from Locarno to Bellinzona instead of Castione-Arbedo, again due to engineering works.

International traffic:

  • Services will be just under ten minutes faster and there will be new departure times for international services from Zurich main station to Stuttgart main station via Schaffhausen, which will improve connections in Stuttgart. SBB will also be offering new ICE services from Chur via Basel to Frankfurt and Hamburg. This will increase the number of direct connections between Basel SBB and Chur.
  • There will also be some changes to TGV services. For instance, the direct train from Geneva to Marseille and back will not run in summer 2016, although the TGV from Geneva to Nice via Marseille will continue to operate daily. The TGV 9767 (departing Paris at 06:11) to Geneva will no longer run. Due to low demand, direct TGV services between Geneva and Lille will also be withdrawn. Due to construction work on the Eppenberg tunnel, the TGV 9215 from Paris to Zurich main station which departs at 14:23 will now only operate from 3 April to 31 June and from 28 August to 10 December 2016, and will terminate at Basel SBB (arriving 17:26). For the same reason, the TGV 9230 that runs from Zurich main station to Paris (arriving 21:37) will now start from Basel SBB (departing 18:34). There will be further major timetable changes from April 2016: the extension of the new line between Strasbourg and Paris in April 2016 will reduce the journey time between the two cities by around 30 minutes. Passengers travelling to/from Luxembourg will now benefit from an attractive daily service with a TGV connection via Mulhouse. These changes are, of course, listed in the online timetable.
  • On the north-south corridor, certain busy EuroCity trains running on the Lötschberg and Simplon corridor (as far as Brig and, in some cases, as far as Domodossola) will operate with two sets in the future. On the Gotthard route, Trenitalia is replacing its ETR 470 tilting trains with modern ETR 610 trains. Services between Lucerne and Milan will also be served by ETR 610 trains.

Ambitious timetable change.

The timetable change on 13 December 2015 is set to be the most ambitious since "Rail 2000" was introduced in 2004. This is partly due to the Zurich cross-city link being opened to long-distance traffic and the beginning of the fourth phase of improvements to the Zurich S-Bahn (stage two). Meanwhile, extensive construction work is starting between Renens in the canton of Vaud and Lausanne as part of the "Léman 2030" project. This work on the east–west corridor, the main artery of the Swiss railway network, will inevitably have an impact on the timetable. For this reason, SBB is changing the routes of various long-distance train journeys throughout Switzerland that run along this corridor. In order to keep the timetable as stable as possible, SBB has used up all its remaining timetable reserves. There will not be any significant changes to the timetable for north–south services.

Overall, long-distance services are set to expand by 660,000 train-kilometres, or roughly one percent, while regional services will increase by as much as 2.7 million train-kilometres, or 3.3 percent.
