Video monitoring equipment is operated for the purpose of protecting passengers, operations and infrastructure.

It is intended in particular:

• to protect staff, passengers, customers and visitors against aggression and harassment
• to secure valuable items
• to protect against damage
• to enable passenger numbers to be computed for operational safety purposes

Video data are protected against access by unauthorised persons. Only SBB Police has access to video data.

Within the Cantons of Geneva and Aargau, the cameras installed in the respective railway stations are also used by the cantonal police. This occurs on the basis of joint operating agreements, which take account of legal requirements.

Video data are only secured and analysed by SBB Police following a relevant event. Data are only shared with criminal prosecution authorities upon presentation of a specific disclosure order. 

Data at the railway stations are retained for 120 hours. Depending upon the age of trains, it may also be more limited on trains. Data are erased automatically upon expiry of this period.
