In short: the Half Fare Travelcard PLUS is worthwhile. The money-back guarantee means there’s no risk. And if you travel more than you have paid in, you even benefit from a bonus.
Travelcard PLUS package is worthwhile for you, and which one would work best, answer the following questions:
- Which routes do I travel on?
- What class do I travel in?
- Do I already have a Half Fare Travelcard or another travelcard?
- How much does the journey cost (return)?
- How often do I travel (on this route)?
I generally work from home in St Gallen, but still travel to the Winterthur office once or twice a week. I usually travel in 1st class – and sometimes with colleagues in 2nd class. In addition to my Half Fare Travelcard, I use EasyRide in the SBB Mobile app so I don’t have to worry about choosing the right ticket. That’s handy. In my leisure time, I sometimes travel by car and sometimes by public transport. I decide depending on the situation. If I use public transport, I buy supersaver tickets whenever possible, using SBB.ch or the SBB Mobile app.
- CHF 40.60 (St. Gallen–Winterthur, return, 1st class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × 1.5 times per week × 40 weeks = CHF 2436
- CHF 23.80 (St. Gallen–Winterthur, return, 2nd class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × 1.5 times per week × 7 weeks = CHF 249.90
CHF 40 (average price: return journey for an excursion, 2nd class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × 8 excursions = CHF 320
- Extension of the Half Fare Travelcard for CHF 170.
- Buy the Half Fare Travelcard PLUS 3000 for CHF 2,100 (you save CHF 900)
I’m 23, doing a Master’s degree in Fribourg and working part-time. I can often participate in classes remotely and only have to be present in person for certain courses. I can easily walk or cycle to work from my home in Bulle, and I usually cycle in my leisure time. My parents live in Vevey. I visit them at least once a week by public transport, travelling in 2nd class. With the Half Fare Travelcard for Youth, I get everything half price. For total flexibility, I use EasyRide to buy my tickets.
CHF 17.40 (Bulle–Fribourg, return, 2nd class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × once a week × 30 weeks = CHF 522
CHF 17.20 (Bulle–Vevey, return, 2nd class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × once a week × 52 weeks = CHF 894.40

I live and work in Bellinzona. I travel to work by public transport and have a Regional Travelcard for the Arcobaleno network (1–2 zones). This is worthwhile and convenient for my daily mobility. My family and a few friends live in Zug. I visit them roughly every other weekend. I often buy my ticket for the outward journey ticket in advance on SBB.ch or the SBB Mobile app so I can benefit from supersaver tickets. To be flexible for the return journey, I buy my return ticket on the spur of the moment before I leave, using the SBB Mobile app. In addition to my Regional Travelcard, I also have a Half Fare Travelcard, so I benefit from half-price travel. I always travel in 2nd class.
- Outward journey: CHF 14 (example of price: supersaver ticket Bellinzona–Zug, 2nd class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × once a week × 25 weeks = CHF 350
- Return journey: CHF 25.50 (Point-to-Point Ticket Zug–Bellinzona, 2nd class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × once a week × 25 weeks = CHF 637.50
- Extension of the Arcobaleno annual travelcard for zones 1–2, 2nd class for CHF 732
- Extension of the Half Fare Travelcard for CHF 170
- Buy the Half Fare Travelcard PLUS 1000 for CHF 800 (you save CHF 187.50)
I like to use public transport for my trips from my home in Delémont, as it allows me to travel flexibly and comfortably, I don’t have to look for a parking space and, above all, I can enjoy the wonderful views. For this reason, I occasionally treat myself to 1st class. When I travel with my grandchildren, I travel 2nd class. For inspiration, I always go to a staffed point of sale and ask for advice on possible excursion destinations. With a Half Fare Travelcard, I can often benefit from discounted Day Passes. For familiar routes, I like to buy my ticket from a ticket machine I know or use the SBB Mobile app.
- CHF 80 (average price: return journey or Day Pass for an excursion, 1st class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × 18 excursions = CHF 1,440
- CHF 40 (average price: return journey or Day Pass for an excursion, 2nd class, with Half Fare Travelcard) × 12 excursions = CHF 480
- Extension of the Half Fare Travelcard for CHF 170
- Buy Half Fare Travelcard PLUS 2000 for CHF 1,500 (you save CHF 420)
I usually travel by car, both for work and for leisure. It gives me independence and I don’t have to worry about catching the train/bus. However, depending on the route and the weather, I also use public transport to attend customer meetings in the Valais area. When I do so, I like to travel in 1st class from my home in Sion so that I can work without being disturbed on the way. I buy my tickets online at SBB.ch. It’s easy to find the right ticket on the timetable and I don’t have to go to a ticket counter or a ticket machine. Whenever possible, I make sure that I can benefit from special offers – so I can save even without a Half Fare Travelcard, because I don't have one.
CHF 80 (average price: return journey for customer meeting, 1st class, without Half Fare Travelcard) × 24 journeys = CHF 1,920 (with Half Fare Travelcard it would be: CHF 960)
