Key changes to the 2021 timetable for Northwestern Switzerland.
Basel/Zurich–Arth-Goldau–Lugano and EC Basel/Zurich–Milan.
For passengers travelling from Basel, there will now be two direct EC connections via Lucerne to Milan each day, with departures from Basel SBB at 11:03 and 15:03. The EC trains will now leave Zurich at 33 minutes past the hour. This will create a connection between Basel–Zurich–Lugano/Milan every half an hour and therefore a half-hourly service to Lugano (1 direct connection via Lucerne, and 1 with a change via Zurich).
There will be direct connections from Basel and Zurich, alternately, each hour with the IC2/21/EC (via Gotthard Base Tunnel to Lugano) and with the IR 26 (SOB via the Gotthard panoramic route to Locarno). In the other hour there is a connection at Arth-Goldau on the same platform area. Due to delays in engineering work, the IR26 will only run as far as Bellinzona, instead of Locarno, until 4 April 2021.
More comfortable journeys thanks to the new, modern Giruno rolling stock. The trains offer a high level of comfort with 422 seats, free Wi-Fi, a restaurant and low-floor access.
With the commissioning of the Ceneri Base Tunnel, travel time between Basel and Lugano will be reduced by 28 minutes.
New early morning connection provided by SOB from Lucerne (at 04:54) via Olten (05:28/05:30) arriving at Basel at 05:56.
Due to engineering work there will be major changes to travel times for the following additional Basel S-Bahn trains:
17042 between Pratteln and Basel: Basel now at 07:20 (previously at 07:17)
17044 between Sissach and Basel: Basel now at 07:51 (previously 07:44)
17075 will not stop in Muttenz (17:19) from 14 June 2021 until 10 December 2021
The relocation of the main road (28 January to 21 August 2021) will lead to a total closure on two weekends:
27 February to 1 March 2021 (assembly of provisional bridge)
7 to 9 August 2021 (disassembly of provisional bridge)
The IR36 between Basel and Brugg will be cancelled and the S1 will operate every half hour between Basel and Pratteln and Kaiseraugst and Brugg. Rail replacement buses will run between Pratteln and Kaiseraugst.
Major engineering work for Basel–Muttenz separation and four-lane expansion in Liestal (all year).
In 2021 night-time closures are primarily expected. On some weekends, this will lead to (partial) cancellations of trains and rail replacement buses.
