Before each journey, you can decide on the spur of the moment whether or not you want to travel in 1st class. 

Requirements.

Route-specific class upgrades are only valid in combination with the following 2nd class tickets or travelcards:

• A (supersaver) ticket.
• A Day Pass for the Half Fare Travelcard, Saver Day Pass, Municipal Saver Day Pass, Special Day Pass.
• A GA Travelcard.

Offer.

Route-specific class upgrades are available at full and discounted prices.

• Passengers aged 16 or over without a discount can purchase a class upgrade at full price.
• Children aged at least 6 and under 16 and passengers with a Half Fare Travelcard or a 2nd class GA Travelcard can purchase route-specific class upgrades at a discounted price.

Purchasing.

You can buy a class upgrade for the relevant route online at SBB.ch, via the SBB Mobile app, from SBB ticket machines or at any staffed public transport point of sale.

As a basic principle, you must purchase the class upgrade BEFORE the actual departure of the train.

Exception: If you are travelling on a long-distance train (EC, IC, IR) with passenger attendants, you can also buy a class upgrade on the train from the train crew. The minimum price of a class upgrade bought on the train is CHF 10. Important: To purchase a class upgrade, you must actively request this from the train crew.

Tip: Supersaver Class Upgrade.

If you would like to upgrade to 1st class with a discount of up to 50%, the Supersaver Class Upgrade is available.

With a 1-day class upgrade, you can travel in 1st class for a whole day.

Requirements.

• 1-day class upgrades are only valid in combination with the following 2nd class tickets or travelcards:
  • A Half Fare Travelcard plus a Day Pass (Day Pass for the Half Fare Travelcard, Saver Day Pass, Municipal Saver Day Pass, Special Day Pass).
  • A GA Travelcard.
• You must purchase the 1-day class upgrade BEFORE the actual departure of the train.

Offer.

You can purchase 1-day class upgrades at a fixed price for passengers aged 16 or over.

For children aged at least 6 and under 16, we recommend the Day Pass for Children for 1st class. It’s cheaper.

Purchasing.

You can buy a 1-day class upgrade online at SBB.ch, via the SBB Mobile app, from SBB ticket machines or at any staffed public transport point of sale.

In addition to the route-specific class upgrade and the 1-day class upgrade, you can also get a 1-month class upgrade for your 2nd class GA Travelcard. Moreover, you can upgrade from a 2nd class GA Travelcard to a 1st class GA Travelcard at any time.

1-month class upgrade.

Requirements.

A 1-month class upgrade is only valid in combination with one of the following 2nd class GA Travelcards:

• GA Travelcard for Adults.
• GA Travelcard for Children.
• GA Travelcard for Youth.
• GA Travelcard for 25 Year Olds.
• GA Travelcard for Seniors.
• GA Travelcard for Disabled Persons.
• GA Travelcard Familia for Adults.
• GA Travelcard Familia for Youth.
• GA Travelcard for Duos.

In the case of GA Travelcard combinations (GA Travelcard Familia for Adults or GA Travelcard Familia for Youth or GA Travelcard for Duos), 1-month class upgrades for discounted GA Travelcards are only available if:

• The basic GA Travelcard was issued for 1st class;
• Or a 1-month class upgrade with the same first day of validity is also purchased for the basic GA Travelcard.

Offer.

You can purchase 1-month class upgrades at standard and reduced prices.

• For the standard price of CHF 225 for a GA Travelcard for 25 Year Olds or GA Travelcard for Adults.
• For the reduced price of CHF 165 for a GA Travelcard for Children, GA Travelcard for Youth, GA Travelcard for Seniors, GA Travelcard for Disabled Persons, GA Travelcard Familia for Youth, GA Travelcard Familia for Adults or GA Travelcard for Duos (provided the basic GA Travelcard has also been purchased for 1st class).
• 1-month class upgrades are not available for the GA Travelcard Familia for Children or 1-month GA Travelcard.

Purchasing.

You can buy the 1-month class upgrade for the GA Travelcard online at SBB.ch or at any staffed public transport point of sale.

Permanent class upgrade.

You can exchange your 2nd class GA Travelcard for a 1st class GA Travelcard at any time during its period of validity. You will be credited the remaining time for your 2nd class GA Travelcard on a pro rata basis. A permanent class upgrade for the GA Travelcard for Duos and the GA Travelcard Familia for Adults is only permitted if combined with a 1st class GA Travelcard.

For journeys within fare and regional transport networks, you must purchase the relevant regional transport tickets. The fare regulations for the respective fare network apply.
