The family coach.

All InterCity long-distance double-deck trains (IC2000s and LD-double-deckers) include a family coach. The family coaches are kitted out with a play area with various motifs in the middle of their upper deck, where your little ones can let off steam to their heart’s content. You can reserve seats in the family coach online via SBB.ch. Reservations cost CHF 5 per person and seat for the entire journey.

Where in the train is the family coach located? 

The family coach play area is located on the upper deck of the driving coach and can be recognised from a distance thanks to its jungle and dragon-themed motifs. The lower floor has spaces for stowing pushchairs The doors are at least 71 cm wide.

Trains with family coaches run mainly on the following InterCity routes:

• IC1: St. Gallen–Zurich HB–Bern–Geneva Airport
• IC8: Romanshorn–Zurich HB–Bern–Brig
• IC6: Basel SBB–Bern–Brig
• IC61: Basel SBB–Bern–Interlaken Ost
• IC3: Basel SBB–Zurich HB–Chur 

On the lower deck of the IC2000, you will find enough space to stow pushchairs, luggage or bikes.

Long-distance double-decker

Folding seats on long-distance double-deckers.

In several compartments on long-distance double-deckers, folding seats are available. They can be found both on the lower deck of the family coach with the playing area and in the compartments with a pushchair signet on the door. Look at the info sticker on the window when you are in the compartment itself.

Family zone.

To give passengers with pushchairs a more comfortable journey on single-decker InterCity trains, such as the ICN, Giruno and the driving trailer of standard coach IVs, we have set up family areas in 2nd class. You can also put pushchairs in the family area thanks to folding tables. Some tables are also covered with board games. We recommend you use coins as game pieces and visit one of the many dice apps for smartphones in the various app stores for the dice.

The width of the doors in the family coaches and family zones is at least 71 cm.

In our new trains such as long-distance double-deckers, the Astoro and in the newly renovated IC2000 trains, baby-changing tables are available. 

• There are baby-changing tables in the toilets in the family coach and in the toilets in the family zones.
• On regional trains, you can find generally find baby-changing tables in the wheelchair-accessible toilet.
• If you are unsure if and where there are baby changing tables on the train, ask a member of the train crew. Ideally on the platform before you board.

You can also recognise toilets with baby-changing facilities from the baby-changing pictogram.

Changing nappies in the pushchair.

If your train has no baby-changing table in the toilet or the toilets are too far away, you can also change your baby’s nappy in the pushchair.

Changing nappies on a seat.

You can also change your baby’s nappy on a seat in a compartment. 

• Please always use a nappy changing pad for hygienic reasons.
• To ensure privacy and safety, lay down your child alongside the window and sit down on the seat beforehand so that you don’t fall over.
• Please pack used nappies in sanitary bags and only dispose of them after alighting in a rubbish bin on the platform or in the station. (Please don’t throw them in the bin on the train. Your fellow passengers will be grateful.)

Get comfortable and travel with children in the SBB Bistro or the SBB dining car. So you can spend the journey sitting together at the dinner table. Enjoy a drink, snack or one of the many fine dishes on offer as a main meal or a snack. We also offer children’s menus just for them.

What’s more, on the table you can play matching pairs, Uno or other card games. I spy is also always good fun. In addition, the children can draw or read something.
