Our EC coaches sometimes run on cross-border routes, ensuring sufficient seating capacity on our international daytime and night trains. These coaches are currently being refurbished so that they can continue to run for at least another 10 years.

To ensure the EC coaches can continue to run, corrosion damage will be repaired, vehicle bodies will be repainted and energy-saving, radio frequency-transparent windows installed. 1st and 2nd class coaches will be fitted with new carpets, and seat pads will be replaced where necessary. The fleet also encompasses bicycle coaches, coaches with toilets for passengers with disabilities, and 12 panorama coaches. Repainting will give us the opportunity to pep up the exterior design and align the livery to the current SBB design.

Over 250 standard coach IV units underwent such refurbishment between 2019 and 2025. The associated driving trailers have been undergoing modernisation since 2022. This work is due for completion by the end of 2027.
