Travelling for seniors – planning and preparation.
So that you can continue to enjoy comfortable and affordable travel by public transport in your later years, be well prepared and use our tips for accessible travel, discounted travelcards and checking in luggage.
Adjust interchange time on SBB.ch.
If you want or need to take things a bit easier, when you check the timetable, you can select connections that will take you to your destination directly without changing trains (for example, the IR35 which runs between Bern and Chur, instead of an InterCity with a change at Zürich HB). Or you can adjust the interchange time. This will show you connections where you have up to 30 minutes more time to change trains.
To do this, click on ‘Advanced search’ on SBB.ch before you search the timetable.
Scroll down until you reach the interchange times and then select your desired interchange time.
Then click on ‘Search for connection’.
Adjust interchange time on beta.sbb.ch.
You can also adjust the interchange times for timetable searches on the beta.sbb.ch page. To do so, click on ‘Settings’ and then select the desired length of extension under ‘Interchange time’.
Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to adjust the interchange time in the SBB Mobile app, so we recommend planning your journey on SBB.ch or beta.sbb.ch.
On the day of your journey, it’s always worth checking the train formation again in the SBB Mobile app or via a timetable search on SBB.ch (beta.sbb.ch). This shows you in which sectors you can find 1st and 2nd class, coaches with more space and the SBB Restaurant/SBB Bistro.
Are you dependent on a wheelchair or walking frame? If so, at many stations, you can benefit from assistance with boarding, alighting and changing trains. The SBB Contact Center Handicap is available to help you free of charge.
If one person in a household already has a GA Travelcard (e.g. GA Travelcard for Adults or GA Travelcard for Seniors), the other person can enjoy a discounted price.
If you know in advance when you want to travel by train, supersaver tickets or Saver Day Passes are an inexpensive option. You can benefit from up to 70% off the standard fare.
We would be happy to advise you at a staffed point of sale in your local area – or you can even book an appointment for a free personal consultation with SBB so that our staff can help you discover which travelcard or ticket is right for your needs.
Want to make sure you have a seat on the train? By reserving a seat via the SBB Mobile app, online at SBB.ch (beta.sbb.ch) or at a public transport point of sale, you can be sure you’ll have a place to sit.
Going on holiday by train and want to avoid lugging suitcases or loading bicycles? Take advantage of our services for checking in luggage, bicycles or skis. Or rent bikes and winter sports equipment on location.
