This means that all passengers are responsible for making sure that they have a ticket or travelcard. Customers must have a valid ticket or travelcard before the start of the journey (actual departure). Tickets are not sold aboard the train.

In accordance with the relevant laws and tariff conditions, a ticket is deemed to have been purchased on time if the purchase process is completed in full before the actual departure of the public transport vehicle. The same applies to automatic ticketing: the check-in process must have been completed before departure.

To ensure that the purchase or check-in process is completed in time and the ticket is valid, we recommend purchasing digital tickets or activating the check-in before you board a public transport vehicle. If you are already in possession of a valid ticket or travel authorisation before boarding the transport service, there is no risk of travelling without a valid ticket when the vehicle departs. 

Since it is a requirement in Switzerland that a valid ticket must exist for every journey, passengers also need to be able to rely on uniform, comprehensible nationwide regulations. In turn, however, these regulations must also function in all public transport systems (local, regional and long-distance transport) – especially in local transport, where the journey time between two stops is often only a few minutes or even seconds. What’s more, if there were a grace period, the same discussion would arise, but then with regard to the additional one or two minutes. 

Based on the applicable regulations, there is an inherent risk of receiving a surcharge if you are not in possession of a valid ticket before the departure of the transport service. 

You can easily purchase a ticket or check in on the way to the stop or before boarding. This means you won’t run the risk of making the purchase too late, checking in too late, or even forgetting to do so altogether. 

The automatic ticketing system recognises when a person starts using public transport based on their location. There is also no disadvantage if you check out at a later point. You will only be charged for the journey that you actually made. 

SBB does everything it can to ensure that its apps and digital sales systems work at all times. If it turns out that this has not been the case, this will of course be taken into account by the time the case is processed in the back office at the very latest.  

However, various options are available for purchasing a ticket (both analogue and digital). You are responsible for ensuring that you have a valid ticket or travel authorisation when you depart on a public transport service, regardless of the channel you choose to use to purchase your travel authorisation. 

If you decide to make a purchase or to check in using a personal digital device, you are responsible for the functionality of this device. Differences have been found in the reliability and functionality of the various smartphone systems. For example, the purchase process for digital tickets can take longer if network performance is low. It is best to make sure that you have a valid ticket or travel authorisation before you board a public transport service.

The primary task of the ticket inspection staff is to check whether passengers are in possession of a valid ticket. If this is not the case, or if the ticket cannot be presented, the ticket inspectors will record this incident and issue the ‘Travel without a valid ticket’ or ‘Travel with a partially valid ticket’ form. 

Each transport company decides whether leniency is appropriate at a later stage in the process. This makes it possible to resolve each case individually. 

This procedure also facilitates the equal treatment of passengers, as a detailed investigation in the back office with more information (compared to the situation on board the vehicle) offers a better basis for establishing the facts of the case. This is the only way to ensure that the similar cases are treated as equally as possible and that relevant differences in the facts of the case are apparent at the time of the decision. These facts may not have been known at the time of the ticket inspection. 

The handling of cases where leniency may be appropriate is the responsibility of the individual transport companies. If a person cannot present a valid ticket, or presents a ticket which is only partially valid, this will be recorded at the time by the ticket inspection staff. It is possible to have the individual case investigated in more detail at a later point in time if this is initiated by the passenger. There is also the possibility of subsequently evaluating the circumstances of the individual case. Following this, there is also the option of having an assessment carried out by the relevant ombudsman.

Tickets and travel authorisations (check-in) purchased digitally are personal and therefore issued to a name. It is therefore part of the ticket inspector’s job to check the relevant personal details for tickets and travel authorisations (check-in) which are purchased digitally. To prevent incorrect use of the check-in and check-out functions, the train crew may also check the travel authorisation a number of times.  

If you purchased a personal ticket (e-ticket) correctly before departure but were unable to present it during the inspection (e.g. you forgot your ticket/e-ticket, your mobile phone battery was flat or the QR code was unreadable), your details will be recorded by the ticket inspector. You can then present your personal ticket online or at a counter within 10 days of your travel date for a fee of CHF 5. 

If you do not present your valid personal ticket (e-ticket) online or at a point of sale within 10 days using the ‘Travel without valid ticket’ form, you will be charged a processing fee.

Access is based on trusting passengers to have a valid ticket or travel authorisation for their journey. However, random ticket checks are required on board the vehicles. These checks show that a significant number of people repeatedly use public transport without a valid ticket or with a ticket which is only partially valid. 

The purpose of recording data in the central information system is to ensure that passengers who repeatedly fail to present a valid ticket or who repeatedly present an only partially valid ticket can be identified – even beyond the transport company in question. This can help to counteract repeated misuse.  

As a rule, an initial entry in the central information system has no consequences. The travel data is completely deleted after two years. The purpose of the entry is to identify specifically those passengers who have repeatedly been unable to present a valid ticket or who repeatedly present a ticket which is only partially valid – even beyond the transport company in question. This can help to counteract repeated misuse. 

If it is subsequently determined that it was not a case of travel without a valid ticket or travel with a ticket which was only partially valid, or that there was no loss of revenue, the data will be deleted. 

The entry in the central information system has no impact beyond its stated purpose. An entry does not influence any other area of life for the passenger whose details have been recorded. It is therefore not a register like the register of criminal convictions or the debt enforcement register, and it cannot be viewed by third parties.

Market research has shown that service is of course important to customers – but that ticket sales is not at the top of their wish list. What is at the top of the list, however, is the purchase of class upgrades and changes of route. These services will therefore continue to be available on long-distance trains .

If you are unable to present a ticket that is valid for all of the route you are travelling, you will be given a ‘travel without a valid ticket’ document. If you travel without a valid ticket, you will pay a surcharge in addition to the fare. 

Whether you didn’t have enough to time to buy a ticket, or you checked in too late, or if you were no longer able to find the ticket, it makes no difference. Furthermore, your personal details will be electronically recorded and kept for at least two years. You will be charged both the cost of the ticket and the supplement.

You will be given a ‘travel with only a partly valid ticket’ form, if you are travelling with a ticket that is valid for the entire route, but is insufficient for one of the following specific reasons:

RemitF on all services.

• have a ticket for the wrong customer group (e.g. a half-price or reduced-price ticket without justification)
  
• have chosen the wrong mode of transport for part of a route (e.g. on the Berne − Zurich Enge via Zurich HB route, part of the journey is made by tram)

RemitF on regional services.

• who are not in possession of a class upgrade
• who are not in possession of a route upgrade or hold a ticket for a different route (which has the same departure and destination stations or the same departure and destination zones, but another direct and similar route)

• On long-distance services (IC, ICN, IR and international trains), it is still possible to purchase a class or route upgrade on board the train without paying a supplement. The minimum price for a class upgrade is 10 francs.
• This is not possible on Regional Services (RE, R, S, SN).

Yes, the exceptions are as follows:

• Forgotten your personal travelcard: you pay a fee of CHF 5 only.
• Families: children do pay an increased surcharge.
• Groups: the increased surcharge is charged once only.
