The Junior Travelcard allows children aged at least 6 and under 16 to travel for free for a whole year throughout Switzerland with a parent.

The accompanying parent must hold a valid ticket for 2nd or 1st class (e.g. a ticket, GA Travelcard, Point-to-Point Travelcard); the child can travel in either class for free.

The Junior Travelcard is free from the third child.

The Junior Travelcard is issued on the SwissPass.

Yes. The Junior Travelcard is linked to the parents’ SwissPass. However, the child remains the holder of the travelcard.

Yes. Every child who holds a public transport travelcard (e.g. Junior Travelcard, Children’s Co-Travelcard, Regional Travelcard) on the SwissPass has their own SwissPass card. All public transport travelcards are then stored on this card.

No. Each child gets their own SwissPass card.

Notes.

The Junior Travelcard can be checked both on the child’s personal SwissPass card/SwissPass Mobile and on the SwissPass card/SwissPass Mobile of the accompanying parent. It is therefore enough simply to present the SwissPass/SwissPass Mobile belonging to the accompanying parent when the Junior Travelcard is checked. 

Important: Only the Junior Travelcard/Children’s Co-Travelcard can be checked via the SwissPass/SwissPass Mobile of the accompanying parent or companion. All other travelcards can still only be checked via the child’s personal SwissPass. 

No. The Junior Travelcard is only valid if the child is accompanied by a parent. The parent must have a valid ticket for 1st or 2nd class.

• The Junior Travelcard is a personal travelcard and is therefore only stored on the child’s own personal SwissPass.
• Other travelcards: as the child grows older, it is increasingly likely that they will purchase other personal travelcards for travelling independently. A large number of children under 16 already have their own SwissPass card.
• Additional advantages: the child will also be able to benefit from other advantages, for example partner services, such as ski passes or entrance tickets, which can be stored on the SwissPass card.
• Sustainability: the card can be used for five years and can hold numerous different offers and products.

The holder of the travelcard is always the child.

No. Each person can hold only one active SwissPass card.

If for example the child loses their SwissPass card and a replacement SwissPass card was therefore issued, the first card is blocked and can no longer be used. That is how we prevent misuse of the first card.

The Junior Travelcard is now only available on the SwissPass. The standard range is available if you travel with children without the Junior Travelcard – for example, the Day Pass Children for CHF 19 (2nd class) or CHF 33 (1st class). The Day Pass Children is valid across the GA Travelcard area of validity.

The Junior Travelcard is valid for children aged 6 or over and under 16 for one year or until the day before their 16th birthday (at the latest).

No. You can receive a paper Junior Travelcard for your children with a validity of 30 days for CHF 30. Available from any staffed point of sale.

If you are travelling in 2nd class and are only making a few journeys or only travelling with the child for one day, there are alternatives:

• The Day Pass Children for CHF 19 (valid for one calendar day in the GA Travelcard area of validity).
• A half-price Point-to-Point Ticket for each journey (worthwhile for journeys for which the ticket costs less than CHF 19 per day).

The Junior Travelcard has the same area of validity as the Half Fare Travelcard.

No. If you want your child to travel for free, you have the option of buying one of the Swiss Travel System products (e.g. the Swiss Travel Pass). Your child will then receive a Swiss Family Card for free.

If you decide not to use a Swiss Travel System product, you can buy a Swiss Junior Travelcard to allow children to travel for free at any staffed point of sale. You receive it in paper form with a validity of 30 days for the price of CHF 30.

If you are travelling in 2nd class and are only making a few journeys or travelling with your child for one day, the following further alternatives are available:

Initial purchase on the SwissPass card.

As a parent, you can buy a Junior Travelcard on the SwissPass at any staffed public transport point of sale. Read the questions in the Photo and Documents sections.

Online renewal.

If no changes are needed, renew the Junior Travelcard on the SwissPass conveniently online (you do not need a login).

Here’s how it works.

1. Parent 1 (the first person entered) receives a reminder by e-mail.
2. Click on the link in the e-mail and renew the Junior Travelcard.

Would you rather receive an SMS text than an e-mail? On swisspass.ch, you can change the contact channels under ‘Contact channel’ as Parent 1.

Please note:

the free Junior Travelcard provided for the third child and further children must always be renewed at a staffed station as before. Reason: sales staff check that you have a right to the free card manually every year. Please bring both the other Junior Travelcards with you (on the children’s SwissPass cards). Alternatively, buy a Junior Travelcard for CHF 30 per year.

Renewal at ticket machines.

Alternatively, you can also renew the Junior Travelcard at ticket machines. Use the scan function to do so.

• On swisspass.ch – both in the child’s account and in the account of the registered parents.
• At ticket machines – by scanning the SwissPass card of the child or the registered parent.
• Using the digital SwissPass (e.g. in the SBB Mobile app) – in the child’s account as well as in the registered parent’s account. 

We will inform the first parent entered as follows:

• 6 weeks before the last day of validity of the travelcard, we send information telling you that it will soon expire – by SMS text or e-mail depending on your preference. The message will contain a link which you can click on to renew your travelcard conveniently.
• Shortly before / after the first and last day of validity, we will send another reminder – by SMS text or e-mail depending on your preference.

Initial purchase on the SwissPass card.

For an initial purchase, the following payment methods are available at staffed points of sale: cash, vouchers, Reka Check, Reka Rail, Twint, debit or credit card (PostFinance Card / PostFinance Pay, Mastercard, Visa, Reka Card, American Express, Diners, JCB or myOne).

Renew (my child’s Junior Travelcard is already on the SwissPass).

If you renew the Junior Travelcard online, you can pay with a credit card, PostFinance Card / PostFinance Pay, Reka card, by monthly invoicing or with Twint.

If you renew the Junior Travelcard at a staffed point of sale, the following payment methods are available: cash, vouchers, Reka Check, Reka Rail, Twint, debit or credit card (PostFinance Card / PostFinance Pay, Mastercard, Visa, Reka Card, American Express, Diners, JCB or myOne).

If the child is unable to come to the counter, please bring a current digital photo with you.

Requirements.

• Taken from the front (shot from the front, looking at the camera).
• Eyes open and not covered (i.e. no sunglasses, no hair in front of eyes).
• Face fully visible and uncovered.
• No headwear. Exceptions for health or religious reasons upon request.
• The background should ideally be single-colour and neutral, with high contrast between the head and the background.
• The lighting should be even across the photo (no shadows on face).
• A sharp and high-contrast photo.
• Black and white or colour shot.
• Approx. size 35mm × 45mm.
• Digital passport photo: unedited, min. image size 400 × 512 pixels; in .JPG or .JPEG format with a maximum size of 6MB.

Purchasing the travelcard for the first time at a staffed point of sale.

If the child is unable to come to the counter, please bring a current digital photo with you.

For renewal of a Junior Travelcard online.

If your child already holds a SwissPass, the same photo will be used. Children and young people aged at least 6 and under 25 only need a new photo if the current photo was taken more than five years ago.

If you would like a new photo for your child’s SwissPass before the five-year time limit has been reached, please visit a staffed public transport point of sale with the child. The new photo will be taken directly on site. Alternatively, you can bring a digital photo of your child with you. You – or your child – will then receive a new SwissPass card with the new photo. This costs CHF 30.

For an initial purchase of the Junior Travelcard, bring a personal and valid official ID for both the child and the parent(s) or your family booklet.

To obtain the free Junior Travelcard for the third child (and all further children), please bring both of the other Junior Travelcards (on the children’s SwissPass cards).

No. If you always just show the SwissPass card, a separate login is not needed. The child only needs a login if they want to show the Junior Travelcard in an app (e.g. SBB Mobile).

If you want to set up a separate customer account for your child, you need a separate e-mail address for the child. If you have your own customer account on swisspass.ch, you cannot use your e-mail address. Every person with a SwissPass needs their own e-mail address. You will find instructions on how to do this on the general questions on logins page. 

However, you can give your e-mail address for correspondence so that you receive all the relevant information. Go to ‘Customer data’ on swisspass.ch using your child’s login and untick ‘Use login e-mail as contact address’ under ‘Correspondence’. Enter your email address instead.

Tip: 

Select ‘No’ under ‘Contact channel’ for the SwissPass newsletter so that you do not receive the newsletter twice (if you have a customer account yourself on swisspass.ch and you have entered your e-mail address as the correspondence address for the child).

In the profile on SBB.ch.

Untick the box about receiving information from SBB under ‘Notifications’ so that the SBB newsletter is not sent to your e-mail address twice (if your e-mail address is also given as the correspondence address for your child).

Does your child already have a SwissPass card?

The Junior Travelcard is integrated on the SwissPass from its first day of validity.

Is it your child’s first SwissPass card?

The Junior Travelcard on the SwissPass will be delivered by post within around ten days. If you need the Junior Travelcard before then, you can receive a temporary SwissPass from us.

Renewing the Junior Travelcard on the SwissPass.

The Junior Travelcard on the SwissPass is valid from the first day of validity.

• During the ticket inspection, either the child presents their own SwissPass card or you as the parent show your SwissPass card. The Junior Travelcard can be checked on both the child’s and the parent’s SwissPass. 
• The passenger attendant will check whether the right person is travelling with the child. The first names, surnames and photographs of the permitted companions or children are shown to the train crew via the ticket checking device. This information is then checked against the valid official ID or SwissPass presented.
• You must also show your own ticket or travelcard (separate ticket, GA Travelcard etc.) at the same time.
• If the child and/or the parents use SwissPass Mobile (e.g. in the SBB Mobile app), the Junior Travelcard can also be checked on a smartphone.

Yes. To display the child’s SwissPass card via the SwissPass Mobile function (e.g. in the SBB Mobile app), the child needs their own SwissPass login. The Junior Travelcard can also be checked on the SwissPass Mobile of the parent or companion who is travelling with the child. 

To ensure ticket inspection is possible via the app, the child and/or the accompanying parent must have a SwissPass login and have linked it to the app. You will find instructions on how to do this on the general questions on logins page.
