Issuing tickets.

Depending on the offer, tickets and travelcards are issued in the following formats:

• Screen ticket (the ticket is displayed on a screen).
• Printed on paper (PDF format).
• On the SwissPass card (only for travelcards loaded onto the SwissPass e.g. Half Fare Travelcard, GA Travelcard).

Tickets from private operators.

Some routes offered by certain private railways or bus companies cannot be calculated by the system. For this reason, you cannot purchase tickets online for these routes. In these cases, you can purchase your ticket at a public transport point of sale, from the train crew or at local ticket machines.

Night supplements.

Depending on the nighttime network, night supplements are available via SBB Mobile, from ticket machines, at the counter during operating hours or from the train crew. Find out more information directly from your nighttime network.

Yes. You need the other person’s surname, first name and date of birth to do this.

You can purchase group tickets online if you are travelling as a group of 10 or more people. You must have a SwissPass login to do so.

Yes. It is possible to display tickets purchased online at SBB.ch in the SBB Mobile app and vice versa; you can also print out tickets purchased via SBB Mobile on SBB.ch. The only requirement is that the ticket must have been purchased using the same SwissPass login.

If you would like to amend the details of your travel companions, click on ‘Sign in’ in the top right-hand corner on SBB.ch and then on your initials, select ‘Profile’ and then under the ‘Co-passengers’ tile navigate to ‘Change co-passengers’. You can either amend, re-enter or delete the details.

Yes, on SBB.ch you can reserve seats online for up to nine passengers for journeys within Switzerland.

No. If you only occasionally shop online at SBB.ch, you can use the ‘Purchase as a guest’ option after selecting your travel offer. However, if you use this option, you will have to re-enter your address, date of birth and payment methods each time you make a purchase.

You are required to sign in with a SwissPass login only if you are purchasing a Half Fare Travelcard, a GA Travelcard, a Point-to-Point Travelcard, a Regional Travelcard or a group ticket.

However, we recommend you register with a SwissPass login anyway. That way you can benefit from lots of advantages. And you won’t have to re-enter your personal details and payment methods every single time.

No, you don’t need a SwissPass card to register. You can complete a one-time registration without a public transport card via SBB.ch, even during the purchasing process. You can enter your access details (e-mail and password) when making an online purchase on SBB.ch or via the SBB Mobile app and you will be logged in straight away.

You need:

• a computer, tablet or smartphone with an Internet connection.
• an up-to-date Internet browser.
• a valid e-mail address so that we can send you a confirmation.
• a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express Switzerland, Diners Club, myOne),
• or a prepaid card (Visa/Mastercard),
• or Twint, PostFinance Pay, Reka Card
• or a billing address in Switzerland (for monthly invoicing).
• a PDF reader and a printer if you wish to print your ticket.

You can buy tickets for Switzerland up to 6 months before your journey. Please note the following restrictions:

• Tickets for journeys taking place after the timetable change (mid-December each year) can only be purchased once the timetables have been published, usually no earlier than mid-October.
• Day Passes/Saver Day Passes can always be purchased 6 months in advance, as they do not depend on the timetable.
• A reduced advance purchase deadline of 60 days applies to certain kinds of ticket:
  • Tickets within the fare network.
  • City Tickets.
  • Group tickets.
  • All types of travelcards and flat-rate tickets (e.g. Swiss Travel Pass).

You can purchase tickets up until the actual departure of the public transport service online. All passengers must be in possession of a valid ticket before starting their journey. If you buy your ticket after departure, you will be deemed to be a passenger without a valid ticket and the train crew will issue you a new ticket and charge you a surcharge.

If you have a laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access, a ticket purchased online is available to you digitally and you can present it as a screen ticket directly on your device. 

• If you purchased the ticket with a login, go to your profile on SBB.ch. Your ticket will be listed there under ‘Display orders’ and you can present this for inspection. 
• If you made the purchase without a login you will find your ticket in the confirmation e-mail.

You can also print out a paper version of your ticket purchased online at home or in the office and present this.

Please note that some offers must be printed regardless (e.g. leisure travel offers).

Tickets purchased online:

• can be bought via the Internet until shortly before departure.
• can be displayed directly on your desktop or on your tablet/smartphone or printed out. They can be displayed even without SBB Mobile.
• are specific to a person, i.e. only valid with a personal ID document (passport, ID, driving licence, Half Fare Travelcard, GA Travelcard).
• are always limited to a set time and date.

You will see your ticket under ‘Orders’ (if you purchased it with a login). If the ticket is listed there, the transaction has been successfully completed. If the ticket that you have just purchased is not listed, click on “Update tickets”. If you have not received a confirmation e-mail and the ticket you have purchased is not displayed, the transaction was not completed and no payment was charged to your card.

Yes. You can order national tickets by telephone from the SBB Contact Center on 0848 44 66 88 (CHF 0.08/min.). The tickets will be sent to you by post within Switzerland. The delivery time is three working days.

Shipping to European countries is subject to a fee of CHF 8 and delivery takes 14 working days. Tickets cannot be sent to Italy or the United Kingdom.

Monthly invoice (except GA Travelcard/Half Fare Travelcard, e-vouchers/public transport vouchers, international tickets, seat reservations and bike space reservations).

With a login:

If you have not received an e-mail with the download link after making an online purchase and if the ticket you purchased online is not displayed under “Orders”, the transaction was not completed and no payment was charged to your card.

Without a login:

Did you enter your e-mail address correctly? If not or if you’re not sure, we will need the following information from you:

• The payment method (e.g. Mastercard, Visa, PostFinance Pay, purchasing via invoice, Reka, Twint, etc.).
• The amount in CHF.
• The date and time of the purchase.
• The e-mail address used when placing the order.
• The full name of the person who ordered the ticket.

Please provide us with this information using the form for online tickets.

To use a coupon code when making a purchase online at SBB.ch, enter it directly in the ‘Coupon’ field during payment.

Here’s how it works:

1. Start your connection enquiry via the timetable.
2. Select the connection you want and click on ‘Tickets from CHF xx.xx’.
3. Once you have made your selection, click ‘Continue’.
4. Log in or purchase as a guest without logging in and click on ‘Continue’.
5. Enter your voucher code under ‘Means of payment’ and click ‘Buy now’.
6. The discount will be displayed in your shopping basket and will automatically be deducted from the purchase price.
7. Now continue with the purchase as usual.

Yes. However, in some cases, advertising campaigns or mailings for specific offers restrict the use of coupon codes and only allow them to be redeemed for specific items.

Yes. This is possible but only online at SBB.ch and only if you have one single item in your shopping basket.

If you have more than one coupon and wish to purchase more than one item/offer, we recommend that you purchase each item individually and redeem the relevant coupons separately.

It is not possible to deduct smaller amounts when redeeming the coupon code, i.e. the remaining amount is forfeited. This means the best option is to use the code for payment when the ticket costs reach or exceed the value of the coupon.

You can redeem coupon codes online at SBB.ch, in the SBB Mobile app, at ticket machines and in SBB Travel Centres.

It could be for one of the following reasons:

• You have entered the wrong code. Please check your coupon code and enter it again. Please note that the letters are case-sensitive (upper/lower case).

We have modified our voucher system. Please exchange your “SBB e-voucher” for a new voucher.

Public transport voucher.

Yes, the ticket is generally shown in the order confirmation email or you receive a link to download the ticket.

• If you are unable to download the ticket you purchased online via the download link displayed, you can download it and print it out by clicking on the link in the confirmation e-mail.
• If you have not received an e-mail, check that you have entered your e-mail address correctly and that the confirmation e-mail has not gone to your spam folder.
• If you are logged in to SBB.ch, click on your initials in the top right-hand corner, and then select ‘Profile’. You will find your purchased tickets in the ‘Orders’ tile. These can be opened and reprinted at any time.

You need a PDF reader to display and print out tickets purchased online.

Your computer or smartphone may be trying to open the ticket (PDF file) with an application which is not a PDF reader. If you don’t have a PDF reader yet, you can download Adobe Reader free of charge here.

Tickets purchased online are personal and non-transferable and are only valid in conjunction with a valid form of ID belonging to the person travelling (passport, identity card, driving licence). If you have a Half Fare/GA travelcard, this is also a valid form of ID.

Point-to-Point Tickets are valid for the calendar day specified at the time of purchase. If you do not return on the same day or by 5am the following day, please buy a new single ticket for your journey. Supersaver tickets are only valid on the connection that was selected during the purchasing process.

Regional transport tickets are time-limited, with the exception of Day Passes.

No. Tickets purchased online are personal and are not transferable. For this reason, you must present a valid form of personal ID (passport, ID card, driving licence) to the ticket inspector. If you have a Half Fare/GA travelcard, this is also a valid form of ID.

Important: Please always present your Half Fare Travelcard/GA Travelcard as well as your ticket.

Yes, that is possible. You can access the ticket in question in your profile in SBB.ch under ‘Orders’ or directly in the confirmation e-mail.

You can usually have a ticket refunded online before the start of validity. To do so, go to the ticket in your profile on SBB.ch and click on ‘Refund’. Please note that supersaver tickets and Saver Day Passes, as well as other special offers, generally cannot be refunded. Please use the refund claim form for all other refund requests.
